First ever Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event in Asia attracts athletes from 37 countries

CHENGDU, China – The inaugural United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Chengdu Marathon & ½ Marathon took place on Saturday, October 28 in Dujiangyan City, located just outside of Chengdu. Celebrating 20 years of history in 2017, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is the World’s Largest Running Series and the Chengdu race was the first-ever event held in Asia. The City of Chengdu is the provincial capital of Sichuan and the 10th largest city in China with over 7 million people. The event attracted running enthusiasts and music fans from around the world and included three distances: the marathon, half-marathon and a “fun-run.”

“As the leading U.S. carrier connecting the U.S. and China, being a part of the first Rock ‘N’ Roll Chengdu race events was an honor,” said Mark Krolick, Vice President of Marketing for United. “It was a great course, with great people in a great city and we can’t wait to be back next year.”

The event featured live local bands and entertainment at every mile along the course. Seven notable Chinese rock bands including Yao, Ashura and Islands in the South performed on the headliner stage near the finish line to kick-off the biggest running party in the southern Chinese city.

“Marathon running in China has made great progress. Every year millions of people join the sport. Events like the Beijing Marathon and the Shanghai International Marathon are sophisticated. I believe this Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon event will continue to enter more Chinese cities to give runners a different and exciting experience,” said Jeff Edwards, Operations Director of Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series in Asia.

To encourage the runners to take on new challenges, at the celebration party, the United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Chengdu Marathon selected 18 runners to participate in any Abbott World Marathon Major race in 2018, of which six places were awarded to the top three men’s and women’s finishers, and 12 were announced in the lucky draw section on the main stage before the last song.

The United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Chengdu Marathon 2017 was hosted in partnership with Dujiangyan People’s Government, executed by the Dujiangyan Sports Bureau, and organized by Chengdu ShuangYi Sports. Ltd. It also received special support from the Wanda Sports Group. Together with the strong support of United Airlines, the title partner, this event was also generously supported by Under Armour, Michelob ULTRA and C’estbon. There were also several gold-level sponsors which supported the event, namely: Ito Yokado, West Hope Group, GARMIN, and Jingdong Sports.

Science in Sport named official gel of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series today announced a new partnership with Science in Sport (SiS) to become the Official Gel of the series. The agreement spans the entirety of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series where the sports nutrition manufacturer will provide their energy gel as the on-course sustenance. The partnership kicked off at the Synchrony Financial Rock ‘n’ Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon on October 14, 2017 and continues through December 2020.

Chief Executive Officer at Science in Sport, Stephen Moon says: ““We are delighted to have signed this exclusive Global Partnership with Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, which is testament to our science and product superiority. This builds on our reach in the US having already partnered with USA Cycling earlier this year, and supports our International growth strategy.”

The SiS GO Isotonic Energy Gel was the world’s first isotonic Gel; the company’s award-winning formulation effectively delivers an easy digesting and quick supply of carbohydrate for energy during exercise. They are designed to be consumed without water, minimizing the risk of bloating that can sometimes occur with over-drinking and improve the athlete’s training and racing experience. Additional carbohydrate during exercise is known to improve performance, race times and delay the onset of fatigue. The gels are tested under the Informed Sport & Informed Choice Certification program. This approach involves testing every single batch of SiS finished product which leaves the company’s factory, screened against the 2017 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list.

“It is our goal to provide participants with safe and effective products when they run our races,” said John Smith, Senior Vice President of Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. “These gels are developed from science so we are confident we are providing one of the best products out there for our runners’ health and performance. We look forward to kicking this agreement off and working together to provide a healthy and active lifestyle for our consumers.”

More than 600,000 professional and amateur athletes from all over the world will participate in a Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event in 2017, which has expanded to 30 markets worldwide. The series of marathons and half marathons are known for placing entertainment stages along the course, lining the route with cheerleaders and topping the experience off with a finish line concert celebration for all participants. The musically-themed races helped spearhead an active lifestyle movement that provides unique entertainment for runners of all abilities.

-U.S. Olympians Galen Rupp and Jared Ward Headline AACR Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon

-Ethiopia’s Meseret Defar and American Jordan Hasay highlight a stellar women’s invitational field

-2017 marks 40th Running of Historic Half Marathon, site of five World and three American records

Celebrating its 40th edition and recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious road races, the 2017 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon in partnership with Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson once again presents a world-class elite invitational field. The event hits the streets of Philadelphia on Sunday morning, September 17 and is set to be one of the most thrilling races of the year along the flat and fast course that starts at the foot of the iconic “Rocky steps” of the Philadelphia Art Museum and winds along the city’s scenic Schuylkill River.

Leading the charge for the finish-line tape is the man supporting bib #1, Galen Rupp, one of the greatest American distance runners of his generation. The 31-year-old, who lives and trains in Portland, Oregon, is an Olympic silver (10,000m) and bronze medalist (marathon) and a nine-time national champion. Rupp’s personal best for the 13.1-mile half-marathon distance is a mind-blowing one hour and 30 seconds, which equates into running an average pace of 4:34 per mile.

Rupp will square off against American Jared Ward, who was Rupp’s Olympic marathon teammate in Rio last year. Ward ran his personal best for the marathon there in 2:11:30, in less-than-favorable conditions, where he finished sixth overall.  Ward’s fastest half-marathon is 1:01:42 and he also owns top-10 finishes at both the Chicago and Boston Marathons.

Other highly touted competitors are Japan’s Muryo Takase who owns a half-marathon persona best of 1:01:57 and has run 1:02:55 this season, American Tyler Mueller of Boulder, who owns a best of 1:03:21, and HOKA Northern Arizona Elite’s Marty Hehir, who is attending medical school in Philadelphia and has set PRs at 3,000 meters (7:49), 5,000 meters (13:29) and 10,000 meters (28:08) over the past year.

In the women’s race 2010 event champion Meseret Defar returns to the course where she debuted in the half-marathon back in 2010. Defar’s showing that year was incredible with a 1:07:45, which at the time was the fastest half-marathon ever run on U.S. soil. Defar’s running career has been phenomenal with two Olympic gold medals over 5000 meters as well as 12 medals from various world championships.

On Sunday she’ll be toeing the line next to Jordan Hasay of the United States, who finished third at the Boston Marathon in April. Hasay owns an incredible personal best of 1:07:55, which is the third-fastest time ever by an American woman in the half-marathon. The stacked field also features Boston Marathon Champions Caroline Rotich of Kenya and Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia, along with a pair of formidable Japanese contenders in Reia Iwade and Miyuki Uehar.

“It’s great to welcome such a stellar elite field to the 40th edition of the Philadelphia Half Marathon. The race can boast world and American records and the quality on show this Sunday certainly reflects the history of the event,” said Matthew Turnbull, elite athlete coordinator. “It will be intriguing to see how Jordan fairs as she continues her build up to next month’s Chicago Marathon against marathon major victors Rotich and Deba. Plus you have one of the greatest of all-time Defar, a former champion who has run 67:45 on this course and is in great shape after recovering from a long injury lay off.”

The race will begin Sunday at 7:30 am on the Ben Franklin Parkway in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The flat and fast course is extremely picturesque, traversing City Hall, Market Street, Schuylkill River, Falls Bridge and ending back in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art at Eakins Oval. Live coverage will be available on facebook and twitter @RunRocknRoll.

Event weekend will feature two-days of running with the half marathon on Sunday and the AACR Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K and 10K on Saturday, September 16 at 7:30 am and 7:00 am, respectively. Participants can take the “Remix Challenge” by running both Saturday and Sunday to earn the coveted Remix Challenge medal in addition to each race’s finisher medals.  In true Rock ‘n’ Roll fashion, live bands, enthusiastic cheerleaders and spectators will line the race route, concluding with a celebratory finish line festival and post-race Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series headlined by Big Head Todd and the Monsters at Fairmount Park.

Race weekend kicks off with a free Health & Fitness Expo, where runners can find the latest in running technologies, fitness apparel, health and nutrition information and interactive displays. The expo takes place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Friday, September 15 from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The expo is free and open to the public and race weekend registration is available.

Funds raised through donations and custom Humanitarian T-shirt sales to support local recovery efforts and service projects

TAMPA, Fla. (August 30, 2017) – The IRONMAN Foundation® has launched a Harvey Relief Effort campaign to raise critical funds in response to the catastrophic and ongoing severe weather and flooding in Texas. Funds raised will support recovery efforts and service projects in the greater race communities for the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN North American Championship Texas, Memorial Hermann IRONMAN 70.3 Texas and Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon & ½ Marathon.

With record floodwaters devastating much of southeast Texas, tens of thousands of people will seek emergency shelter and more than 450,000 will seek federal aid in recovering from Harvey. When the Category 4 hurricane made landfall, it was the most powerful to hit the United States in a decade. Officials have called the catastrophic flooding the worst in the state’s history. Thousands have been rescued from flooded homes and cars and recovery will take years.

To help raise funds for those in need, the IRONMAN Foundation has set up three ways to help with the Harvey Relief Effort:

  • DONATE – The IRONMAN Foundation will match all donations made by September 30, 2017, up to $10,000. Donations can be made at crowdrise.com/ironman-for-relief-harvey
  • T-SHIRT SALES – 100% of the proceeds raised through the sale of a custom Humanitarian Harvey Relief T-Shirt will go towards the IRONMAN Foundation’s Harvey Relief Efforts. https://shop.spreadshirt.com/IRONMANFoundation
  • VOLUNTEER – The IRONMAN Foundation will be setting up local service projects during race week at the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon & ½ Marathon, Memorial Hermann IRONMAN 70.3 Texas triathlon, and Memorial Hermann IRONMAN North American Championship Texas triathlon to provide hands-on rebuilding assistance. Those interested in these volunteering efforts can register at http://ironmanfoundation.org/harvey-volunteer/

“We are calling upon our IRONMAN and Rock ‘n’ Roll communities to join us in helping to bring relief to these communities in a historic time of need,” said Dave Deschenes, Executive Director for The IRONMAN Foundation. “The areas affected will require ongoing assistance and both donations now and volunteer efforts down the road are critically important for relief and recovery efforts.”

Pledges and t-shirt purchases may be made online or at all IRONMAN, IRONMAN 70.3 and Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series event merchandise stores during September.

The premier media brand for pro bike racing, VeloNews has a 40-year legacy of authentic and authoritative coverage. This summer, the brand broke new ground thanks to impressive audience growth from its innovative digital offerings: FastTalk podcast, VeloNews Podcast and The VeloNews Show (video).

Thanks in part to up-to-the-minute, on-the-ground coverage of the Tour de France, the two podcasts hit a new high of more than 176,000 listens in July. Views of The VeloNews Show increased 60% in July over June—and have continued to stay at a high level in August. This surge of new audience engagement for VeloNews has garnered increased interest from advertisers including BOA Technology, Health IQ and Quarq.

The VeloNews Show, Fast Talk and VeloNews Podcast launched in 2016 and have become central to the pro-cycling conversation. They take enthusiasts behind the scenes of cycling’s biggest races and most important stories, with high-level service tips, breaking news, hot takes and deep dives.

  • The VeloNews Show is a weekly 5-minute video talk show driven by humor, opinion, and news. Hosted by editors Fred Dreier, Spencer Powlison and Caley Fretz, the show focuses on the news of the week, and offers funny and irreverent perspective on what is going on in pro cycling.
  • Fast Talk podcast is your source for the best advice and most interesting insight into what it takes to become a better cyclist. Hosted by coach Trevor Connor and Caley Fretz, the show tackles topics including training, nutrition and tech.
  • VeloNews Podcast is a highly opinionated (and hilarious) show hosted by  Dreier, Fretz and Powlison. It airs every week and focuses on pro-cycling news with interviews with riders, authors and VN contributors.

“176,000 listeners is an exciting milestone, and we are thrilled to see such great momentum and traction for our podcasts,” said Dreier, editor-in-chief of VeloNews. “We are committed to providing an exceptional experience for our cycling fans on new platforms. The VeloNews Show, Fast Talk and VeloNews are a fun new way to deliver experiences and cycling information to our audience.”

Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah will feature two-days of running with the marathon, half marathon and two-person half marathon relay on Saturday, November 4 at 7:30 am and the Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K and One Mile run on Sunday, November 5 at 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm, respectively. Participants can take the “Remix Challenge” by running any distance Saturday and any distance on Sunday to earn the coveted Remix Challenge medal in addition to each race’s finisher medals.

The marathon, half marathon and two-person half marathon relay will once again start on Bay Street at Bull Street and finish at Forsyth Park. Runners will experience charming town squares, historic buildings and canopies of Spanish moss-covered trees. The 5K and One Mile run will take place at Daffin Park.

In true Rock ‘n’ Roll fashion, live bands, enthusiastic cheerleaders and spectators will line the race route, concluding with a celebratory finish line festival and post race Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series at Forsyth Park. The concert is free and open to the public.

Race weekend kicks off with a free Health & Fitness Expo, where runners can find the latest in running technologies, fitness apparel, health and nutrition information and interactive displays. The expo takes place at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center on Thursday, November 2 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, November 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The expo is free and open to the public.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon & ½ Marathon today announced that the Goo Goo Dolls will headline the pre-race concert. The band will perform for more than 30,000 runners on Sunday, November 12 at 3:00 p.m., prior to the marathon and half marathon start.

“The Goo Goo Dolls are one of the first bands that comes to mind when thinking about the late 90’s and we are thrilled to have them headline this year,” said Alex Bennett, Vice President of Events for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. “The band will resonate with runners of all ages and will be a great way to get pumped up before that 13.1 or 26.2-mile journey down the Las Vegas Strip.”

The Goo Goo Dolls reached superstardom in 1997 when they released “Iris” for motion picture City of Angels. The song topped the Billboard charts at number one for four weeks and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Following the success of “Iris,” the band released triple-platinum album, Dizzy Up the Girl, which included “Iris” as well as, “Slide,” “Black Balloon,” “Broadway” and “Dizzy.” The Goo Goo Dolls have also released hits, “Here Is Gone,” “Sympathy” and “Big Machine” and have sold 12 million albums around the world.

The Goo Goo Dolls concert highlights an electrifying weekend of rocking and running as participants span across all eight lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard, shutting down the Las Vegas Strip in extraordinary fashion. Runners of all levels are invited to light up the Las Vegas Strip at night, experiencing the famed boulevard from a unique point of view.

The race returns the weekend of November 11 – 12 and is one of the only private events to exclusively shut down the Las Vegas Strip at night. Race highlights include all the must-see Vegas sights such as the iconic ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign, the Fountains of Bellagio, and the finish line at the foot of the Mirage volcano.

Race weekend begins on Saturday night with the Brooks Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K presented by SLS Las Vegas, followed by Sunday evening hosting the marathon, half marathon and 10K distances. Runners can choose to participate in the “Remix Challenge” and earn a bonus third medal by running in both the 5K on Saturday and any distance on Sunday.

Sunday begins with the Goo Goo Dolls performance at the Las Vegas Village, across from the Luxor. In addition to the headliner concert, live bands and DJs spanning all genres will play along the race courses entertaining and encouraging runners as they make their way to the finish line.

The marathon and half marathon will take off at 4:30 p.m., on Las Vegas Blvd. next to Mandalay Bay. The 10K starts at 4:00 p.m. at an additional start line on Las Vegas Blvd, four miles north of the marathon and half marathon start. Competitor, the leading American running magazine, commemorates its 30th anniversary with the June issue. Readers will enjoy an in-depth look back at the publications’ history and top stories with co-founder and endurance-sports legend Bob Babbitt.

Launched in 1987 by Lois Schwartz and Bob Babbitt, Competitor initially started as a regional publication that covered running, cycling, and triathlons in Southern California. Over time, the magazine has defined itself to become the true authentic voice of running in America and has expanded all over the United States, reaching more than 580,000.

“Our inspiration for Competitor stemmed from the athletes we were meeting and their incredible stories.  It’s not only the elite athletes that have adventures and insights, but all athletes,’ says  Jessie Sebor, Vice President of Media at Competitor Group, Inc.  ‘Sharing these stories of perseverance through running has allowed us to connect, move and inspire readers, and that’s what Competitor is really about.”

The founders credit a grassroots strategy for the initial growth of Competitor and personally handed out the magazines at races, introducing the brand and culture to elite runners, new runners, and interested spectators alike.  Over the years, the magazine has featured a variety of runners sharing their personal journeys and how the sport has helped them overcome obstacles and enrich their life.

“The Competitor brand has always been about changing lives through endurance,’ says Sebor. ‘We hope to continue changing people’s perceptions of themselves through achievements at any level.  All it takes is to put on a pair of running shoes and you can change everything.”

Other stories in the issue include ‘New Summer Trail Shoes,’ ‘When and How to Run With a Group,’ and ‘Cross-Training: At-Home Boxing Routine.’
