Spencer Powlison named Editor of VeloNews.com; longtime contributor Logan VonBokel joins editorial team as tech Reporter; Matthew Beaudin promoted to Senior Writer
BOULDER, Colo. – July 3, 2014 — As the 101st edition of the Tour de France commences this weekend, Velo today announced Spencer Powlison as the new Editor of VeloNews.com and Logan VonBokel as a Tech Reporter for both Velo and VeloNews.com. Additionally, Matthew Beaudin has been promoted to the title of Senior Writer.
Offering fans the most comprehensive news and analysis throughout the event (July 5 – July 27, 2014), VeloNews.com is bringing cycling fans three weeks of intense coverage of the latest news, highlights and photos from the sport’s most prestigious stage race.
“We’re headed into the Tour de France with an all-star squad, an editorial team that includes some recent acquisitions,” said Neal Rogers, editor-in-chief of the Velo brand. “I’m delighted to announce the addition of two talented new full-time staff members and the promotion of Matthew Beaudin. Velo and VeloNews.com continue to be produced by cyclists, for cyclists. Our editorial and sales teams are proud to understand and embrace the sport of bicycle racing.”
Beaudin, who will cover his third consecutive Tour de France, began writing for Velo in 2012 and has covered races all over the world, including the Giro d’Italia and Amgen Tour of California. He previously served as the editor of The Telluride Daily Planet.
Powlison, a longtime contributor based in Boulder, Colorado, has worked in the bike industry for the majority of his career, from turning wrenches in a Vermont bike shop to his five-year tenure at the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). An avid bicycle racer, Powlison loves pinning on a number, whether it’s in a local criterium, a mountain bike enduro, a cyclocross national championship, or a gran fondo. Most recently, he worked as marketing coordinator for the Brewers Association while feelancing as a part-time tech reporter.
VonBokel joined the VeloNews team in 2012, first as an intern, while he finished out his degree at Colorado State University, and then as a part-time contributor. Coming from a background in elite road and cyclocross racing, he has a keen interest in all things cycling, from road to cyclocross to mountain bike.
The new hires complement an award-winning editorial staff, which includes Tech Editor Caley Fretz, European Correspondent Andrew Hood, longtime photographer Casey B. Gibson, and Managing Editor Chris Case.
