Chris Case named Managing Editor; Matthew Beaudin joins editorial team as Staff Reporter; Brian Holcombe promoted to Editor of VeloNews.com

SAN DIEGO, Calif. and BOULDER, Colo. – May 2, 2012 — Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), the leading active lifestyle sports media and event entertainment company, today announced Chris Case as the new Managing Editor of Velo Magazine and Matthew Beaudin as a Staff Reporter for both Velo and VeloNews.com.

“The Velo editorial team is poised to build on the 40-year legacy of America’s foremost source for everything cycling,” said Kurt Hoy, Group Content Director of CGI. “It’s made up of cyclists who are experienced and relevant; they ride and they race. Cycling evolves—the products, the pro peloton and the industry. This is Velo evolved.”

Additionally, Brian Holcombe has been promoted to Editor of VeloNews.com. Holcombe previously served as the Managing Editor of Velo and reports to Neal Rogers, editor-in-chief of the Velo brands.

“It brings me great pleasure to announce the addition of two talented new staff members and the promotion of Brian Holcombe, an exceptional leader who has devoted so much of himself to Velo over the past three years,” said Rogers, who oversees both print and digital editorial content. “With his cycling knowledge, keen editorial instincts and attention to detail, Brian is ideally suited to continue the tradition of VeloNews.com as the as the market leader for English-language competitive cycling analysis and breaking news.”

Holcombe began contributing to Velo in June 2009 and joined the company as a staff reporter in February 2010. He has covered races all over the world, including the Tour de France, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Tirreno-Adriatico, as well as the U.S. cyclocross and road national championships. A Cat 2 cyclocross racer and a Cat 3 roadie, Holcombe is also nearing completion of a Masters degree in digital media management at the University of Denver.

“The recently redesigned VeloNews.com is the perfect platform to deliver the most compelling cycling content available on the web, and our readers have already seen undeniable enhancements over the past six weeks,” said Holcombe. “I look forward to working with new hires Chris and Matthew as we unify our print and digital content strategies. More than ever, VeloNews.com is an essential home for tech news and reviews, racing analysis and storytelling, supported by captivating photography and video.”

Case formerly managed Trail & Timberline, the quarterly magazine of the Colorado Mountain Club. He also recently co-authored a book on the history of Colorado Mountains and mountaineers. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for the American Cycling Association, the local affiliate of USA Cycling in the state of Colorado, and earlier this year he earned silver medals at both the national and world masters cyclocross championships.

An engaging writer, Beaudin served as the editor of The Telluride Daily Planet for the past five years. He will help lead coverage of the upcoming Amgen Tour of California and is also an avid bicycle racer, most often in the single-speed cross-country category.

“Both Chris and Matthew have well-rounded media backgrounds combined with a passion for the sport of bike racing,” added Rogers. “Velo and VeloNews.com continue to be produced by cyclists, for cyclists.”

The new hires complement an award-winning editorial staff, which includes European correspondent Andrew Hood, renowned photographers Graham Watson and Casey B. Gibson, and the Velo tech team of Nick Legan, Lennard Zinn and Caley Fretz. For more information about Velo, including advertising rate cards and an editorial calendar, visit CompetitorMediaKit.com.
